July18 thru Aug10
The fishing has been really productive from the northern end of Everglades National Park, including Marco Island all the way down to Flamingo 100 miles away. I really didn’t keep track; but we had backcountry slams and grand slams on almost every trip.
First off, I fished the Redfish Open Tournament in Everglades City with my two fishing partners just for fun with Capt Timmy Shabareck and Capt. Bruce Carlton. On our pre-fishing day these two put on an exhibition on how to catch fish while I poled them around. Snook after Snook up to 10lbs we were supposed to be Redfishing.Once we arrived at Lostman’s River the show continued but now they were catching Redfish. We were confident the spot would hold fish in the morning releasing a 26.5inch 71/2lb Red and left it alone. There are numerous oyster bars in the area of Broad Creek we bounced our jigs mine a DOA Terrorize (root beer) and continued to find Reds and Snook. We had a positive outlook for the next day and called it quits.
Tournament morning we made a thirty mile run to Lostman’s River. The bite was on pretty good by 830 we had a couple fish in the livewell. Capt Bruce had hooked a 5.8lb fish and our other fish was small one. Later we upgraded the little fish and spent most of the afternoon Tarpon fishing with a couple Snook thrown in. We had such an incredible bite we kind of went with it. It probably cost a few dollars because we finished in 11th place but did get a check for the10th largest fish caught. Anytime you can catch Snook, Redfish, Tarpon and Trout in the same day that’s a Grand Slam. We did it two days in a row several times. That was just an incredible couple days of fishing.
The week July 29-Aug 1. Snook fishing around Marco Island was excellent in 4 days we released Snook from 4 to 20 lbs all but the big ones came D.O.A. Glow Shrimp. The Tarpon were around but not as active as the as Snook, we managed to jump 1. The Jacks and Big Ladyfish were chasing the minnow schools. This is a great way to teach kids how to fight fish; proper pressure on the reel spool; leverage and even bowing to a Ladyfish come from situations like these. Its’ all about the catching, plus it’s fun for them.
This report is getting long so I will shorten it up. This last week I’ve spent pre-fishing for the Redfish Tour in Key Largo. The tour has come and gone and all I can say is fishing was good to great. I really don’t know if customers understand how much of an accomplishment catching a Grand Slam is and when they do it on artificial lures it a great feat. I really think it’s a bonus when we get one.
As far as the Redfish tournament went, Flamingo is the one Tour stop where 125 boats don’t have as much room to fish as other locations. That being said the anglers caught fish. Congratulations to the winners my buddies Capt’s Mike Hutchinson and Mike Haines these guys did a great job. As far as my team we finished 41st . My partner Capt. Timmy Shabareck and I have our goals set to make the Tour Championship in Louisiana and we are hoping to move up a few notches in the team of the year standings. We are off to Jacksonville and Goodland in the next couple weeks.
The Tarpon are in, Snook are popping Topwater lures and as you read the Redfish are everywhere. If this excites you give me a call and book a trip of your lifetime. (305) 362-6460
