| Red hot Mullet run
Miami area
The past couple of weeks we have experienced the fall Mullet run, along with the Mullet run comes some heavy Nor’easters. The wind has not dropped below 20 mph for more than 1 day in a row it seems, but this all has an everlasting effect all winter long. I really try to get some days out on the beaches chasing the bait schools but the wind makes it difficult. The next best thing is the intercoastal. The Mullet schools drive thru the inlets and the Jacks, Snook and Tarpon have been there to cooperate by eating them. Jim case and Rudy experienced that when a giant Tarpon ate a Bass Assassin Jim was casting off the bow, at that same time a 150lb Tarpon ate a live mullet off the back of the boat.
A couple of days later while fishing with my daughter in the Miami Sportfishing Club Tarpon Tournament the Tarpon/Snook were destroying the schools of Mullet, but they would not eat our baits that day. She did manage to catch the big fish of the day a 14 lb Jack Crevalle on 8lb test. Kevin Kelly got to experience the total opposite in frustration, we watched Tarpon roll and free jump all day with out a bite; thankfully the Jacks weren’t scared to pick a fight. We had several big hits on the live Mullet a couple of Snook and a big Barracuda, which cut us off. The baits don’t seem to pushing to the south very hard so the action could continue for a couple more weeks in the N Biscayne Bay area
Flamingo
The seasons are starting to change down in the Everglades, with the cooler water temps the backcountry fishing turns on and the Mosquito’s disappear. The rivers will be full of Snook and small Tarpon, if we go back far enough there is the possibility of catching Bass. The last several weeks the Tarpon have still been out in Fl. Bay around several flats I fish. They will move after the first cold front. The Snook fishing has been consistent.
The next Month we should experience some decent flats, backcountry and river fishing as well as some decent Cobia action in the Gulf of Mexico. The Snook, Trout and Redfish will be available in good numbers usually schooled up in holes The Bonefishing will be excellent on the warmer days as the fish wont leave the flats as quickly as a summer day.
Forercast
The winter Tarpon fishing will be starting, if a Giant Tarpon is a goal or dream the next 5 months are the time. There will be Tarpon on the beaches of Miami from Haulover to South Beach just waiting to eat Shrimp. Starting in the end of February on the warmer days the BIGGEST Tarpon turn on in the Backcountry of Everglades National Park. This is light tackle sight casting at rolling Tarpon that will inhale an artificial lure and jump. This is what the Docter ordered , if this don’t cure your fishing needs nothing will!
