March 2003 Fishing Reports

Tarpon Hot and Cold

Normally this time of year the Tarpon fishing off Miami Beach and Government Cut is excellent. To say I have struggled during the daylight hours is an under statement. The evening fishing has been more consistent. It could have something to do with water temps going from 65 to 80 degrees or all the west winds keeping the water very clean or the lack of shrimp runs.

Not to worry! The Tarpon have been pretty active in the back country in Everglades National Park. There are a lot of guides/anglers that wait for these fish to arrive,if you have read my reports before you know I was one of those people. These Tarpon have provided some of my customers some heart stopping takes and a great sense of accomplishment on the tought days, when they were not actively feeding. I have a policy I dont leave if we are catching fish and I dont leave until we catch fish. This can make for some very long days either way.
Sometimes that extra effort we put in pays off. Then there are days like the last couple where the Tarpon were on fire and everyone of the ten boats fishing were getting there share of hook ups. Today, I fished with my son he is learning the fishing game quickly. His first cast was a 16 in snapper that came out of the mangroves to eat a D.O.A. Terrorize. After that we ran to the area the Tarpon have been holding in. There he made his first cast again hooking 90lbs of high flying head shaking Tarpon. It was a grat day he out fished me 4-3 on the Tarpon and to top it off he caught a 9.8 jack on the way in.

I have not been fishing out front Flamingo (Fl.Bay)since around December, but the fish are there. The 81 degree water temps have them in a spring timre pattern and happy about it. As you can see it's hard for me to leave those fish in the back country.

I will be traveling to Lafitt,Louisana to fish the Redfish Tour, I will be gone from March 16-25. I am looking foward to this trip.

Tarpon /Snook Your Choice

The week of 03/10/03 was hot. The Tarpon in Whitewater Bay were really active. We had days of 7-9-11 fish. All the fish were in the 90 lb class there was a really good snook bite on Friday 03/14/03. we started out really early before sun up and had 5 really nice snook in the boat on the way to the Tarpon spot.

The fishing in Florida Bay-Flamingo area is getting really good right now and will continue all summer thru the fall. Tarpon Snook,Redfish and Trout will be on there best behavior for the anglers searching for them.

I just returned from Lafitt,Louisiana for the latest stop on the Redfish Tour. Along with my partner Capt.Timmy Shabareck we made the long drive from Miami for Redfish, lots of them. We started our trip by studying aerial maps, fishing charts and fishing reports for a couple months. Once we arrive we got our first taste of the bayou, getting lost for 2 1/2 hours. We checked in the C Way Marina/Hotel and went to a local restuarant and had one of the finest meals I've ever had.

The next morning we went Redfishing actually the next eight days we went Redfishing. We travelled all directions east and west and north and south in our search of the big slot fish we had heard about. It didn't take long and we found some. These fish were 26 inches long and 8.5lbs much bigger than our Flamingo Redfish we target at Everglades National Park. The Louisiana Redfish look like the eat baseball's and some actually look like they eat footballs.

As the days passed we finally got the hang of the area, the local guides and fisherman were of great assistance. The Rules of the tournament are you cannot solicit or buy information, but the locals are incredible. They feel they need to help and tell you everything that you need to know.

All in all myself and my partner caught fish everday but one and they seemed to get bigger. We went into the tournament days feeling pretty good having caught slot fish from 7 to 10.8 lbs.

Tournament day finally came and we were the last team #125 to leave the dock. We had to run 30 miles to our hot spot. It didn't take long once we were there we had 10lbs in the first 20 minutes. The only problem we had was finding the bigger fish we had been catching. Our roommates for the week were there in the same area and they had a couple good fish, so our hopes were high.
We ended up the day with 11.63 which would be great at any other Redfish Tour stop, but not in Louisiana.

Day 2 the running order is reversed we were #1 boat. Today we had a change of strategy. We decide to run to a spot which was closer and it paid off quickly, by 615 we had 10.lbs in the boat. now we had to make the decsion of staying our running back to the previous days spot. We decided to stay in the area and try to upgrade . we ended up upgrading almost 2 more lbs. but not the big fish we were looking for.

We ended up 76th out of 125 teams. not great but we ended up with points toward the championship which is back here at Lafitt.
I can't wait.

This is the time of year most guides wait for because its easy to show your customers a good time and cacth big fish.
Give me a call for the ultimate fishing trip.
Tight lines and screaming drags. Capt Jimbo
