| Fish slow and deeper
Happy Holidays.
On Friday morning Dec.4 we were in short pants fishing for Tarpon in he north end of Biscayne Bay. On Friday night at 9 pm I was at the Cheeca lodge in Islamorada as the first major cold front of the year made its way thru. I was at the captains meeting for the Redbone tournament and there was some talk about were the fish were that day. The one thing everybody there new was, with the conditions that were expecting the fish would move. I met my anglers Eddy and Kim Cardieri early Saturday morning it was cold and very windy. I decided to Redfish first and try to get the Bonesfish later in the day or on Sunday to complete the Redbone. We made the run to Flamingo from Islamorada. it was blowing out of the N.W. about 20-25 mph. The flats were completely out of the water, I had two places I knew held Redfish in these conditions, as we arrived at the first one Tarpon were rolling everywhere. I love Tarpon its very hard to pass them up. We poled into position and set up on a point of a flat, which had a deeper trough 1.8ft.deep running thru it. Kim was blind casting and hooked the first Redfish, as I stood on the platform I could see the Reds mudding and then Eddy and Kim would cast and catch them. They ended up catching 13 we lost one, Eddy caught a real nice Black Drum. They all were not keepers 9 were just short of 18 inches, but Kim put on a clinic on how to catch them.
Later at the weigh in, we found out we turned in the most Reds on day 1. On day two we went Bonefishing in the really cold temps, they were not to be found for 8 hours we poled and searched from a half a foot to 6 feet from Islamorada to N. Key Largo. When 3 o’clock came around we were really disappointed but we had Saturday to rest our hat on. Kim ended up be runner up female angler, which was great.
The cold weather is staying with us, on the coldest of days look for deeper troughs with some current this pattern works for me. As long as it cold the fish will stack up in the troughs and channels, I usually stake out so I can fan cast the trough. I use a Hank Brown Jig head in 3/8 or ½ ounce and tip it with either half or whole shrimp. The other technique that works is a D.O.A Terrorize slowly worked on the bottom. This past week while fishing with Gary, Fred and Jim I gave Fred the Terrorize to cast while the other two fished shrimp, Fred caught a 28”Snook the biggest of the Day. Shortly after Gary wanted that lure he caught a Snook also, again this is bouncing along the bottom very slowly. Later in the day we went to an area and bounced Hank Brown jigs tipped with shrimp for Reds at the end of the day we had 9 Reds, 3 Snook and a couple big fat Black Drum a big Sheephead along with all the Jacks, Trout, Ladyfish, we wanted. Gary caught a backcountry slam of Snook, Redfish and Trout. We made some cast at Tarpon but They were not interested.
Remember the Met fishing tournament is going on now. It is free and open to anyone. This tournament rewards anglers for released fish.
The Tarpon fishing will begin to get really good in the next couple of weeks along the coast of Miami Beach and Government Cut. These fish run 70-120lbs. If your on vacation on the Beach and want to catch something big give me a call. (305) 333-8149.
Dont forget the big Tarpon run at Flamingo during Feb-April. Those are the fish of a lifetime.
Let’s go catch’in. Capt. Jimbo Select another page || Go to Home Page
