Tarpon Time

Miami area

There here, the Tarpon that is. During the holidays the Tarpon showed up off of Miami the and in Whitewater Bay down in Everglades National Park. This is the time of year for the early evening Tarpon bite. I usually set up around 5:30 so we can locate the Tarpon by sight. We look for them rolling on the surface gulping air. This was the case several nights ago when I was fishing with Rob and Del from Michigan. While running to the Tarpon area out of Haulover Inlet, I spotted a large school rolling. We circled back around and started to drift our Jumbo Shrimp thru the schools. There was no wind calm and slick and the Tarpon show was incredible only they were not eating, yet! The Shrimp were not drifting fast enough so we tried the glow in the dark D.O.A. Shrimp. We had one really nice swirl but no luck. I tried something I normally don’t do in this area, a Mirror lure catch 2000 in black. We were right at dusk; I figured the silhouette would be large under the surface. I was right, after 3 or 4 cast into the school there was a large flash under the lure, then a second and the an 80 pound Tarpon jumping out of control. The next 15 minutes were tons of fun for Rob; this is what he came for. This Tarpon was on a 10lb Biscayne rod with 10lb test, it don’t get any better. Later we hooked two more on Jumbo Shrimp landing a 50 pounder.

The Tarpon are in Government Cut and on the beaches off of South Beach. On 01/102004 , we had an excellent trip on the full moon, as it was rising. That night while Tarpon fishing we landed mangroves of 3, 4 and 6 pounds to be followed up by 1 out of 3 on Tarpon a 30lb fish, on the D.O.A glow Shrimp.
Chris was from Newfoundland, Ca. and the weather was right up his alley, cold and windy.

The next morning was a different story, the Tarpon were gone less than 7 hours before we had caught them in the same area, it was colder and windier. We fished two parties on two boats and ended up with some more of those big snappers. The guys on the other boat had a shot at a Cobia.

Flamingo

01/01/2004 what better way to start out the new year than to take your kids fishing. We arrived early and it was a pretty day to start the New Year warmer than it had been in weeks. We started out the day by catching Trout and Ladyfish and showing my kids the wildlife .They actually got to see several Crocodiles and a Bald Eagle as well as free jumping Tarpon and Porpoises chasing bait. On 01/02/2204 I was down with Doug, Danny and Joel from Iowa. They enjoyed this much more than the cold they left at home. We caught a little of everything but they wanted to try their hand at a big Shark. We had saved a 5 lb Jack Crevalle just for that, I butter-flied the Jack and rigged up a 15lb rod, well it didn’t take long for a100 lb Bull Shark to find it. Joel fought it for 20 minutes getting it up next to the boat for several photos

The backcountry is going to loaded with big Tarpon for the next few months, everyone seems to forget about the other species for a while, but they are still there. Once the water gets around 70 for a couple days they turn on. I say this a lot, but this is really cool light tackle Tarpon fishing, casting to rolling fish that eat with lures and flies. The small ones are 70lbs so that says a lot about size.

If Tarpon fishing gets your blood pumping like it does to me, give me a call (305) 333-8149
And lets go catch’em
