February Report

Tarpon,Tarpon,Tarpon

Miami area
The old saying “time flies when your having fun” really explains the month of January. The Tarpon I spoke about in last months report are here. They are along the beaches of Miami as Rob and Del of Michigan found out one beautiful cool evening in front of Haulover Inlet. Between them they were 2 for 3 with a nice one of 80lbs. caught on a Mirrorlure catch 2000, normally we don’t use plugs for these fish but it seemed to be the right thing to do at the time. Matt from Wisconsin also had a dream of a Tarpon, that came to reality landing a 50lb. fish off of South Beach, he also caught a Mangrove Snapper that weighed over 5lbs. Chris from Newfoundland same experience, a 40pounder on 10lb.spinning gear another Tarpon on artificial, this time it was a D.O.A. Glow in the dark Shrimp. This is not the best month at all; in fact the fish are still small. The bigger Tarpon will arrive daily and stick around until June.

The schools of Mangrove Snappers have been incredible, last month we caught 2 between 5 and 6 lbs. not to mention all 2 to 4 lb fish.

I recently fished some Sailfish days one was with team Sea Vee in the Mayors Cup inaugural Sailfish Tournament. This was one of those tough tournaments we lost 2 sails, the winner only had 5 Sails and the Dolphin, Kingfish bite was slow as well.

Congratulations to The Miami Sportfishing club for taking top honors at the Miami Beach Rod and Reel Club Tournament. This is the 9th year and every year it is a battle.

Flamingo area

The weather has been cool; we are waiting for some warm days. The Tarpon will be responding by eating our lures and flies. On Jan 29 and 30 I was way back in the Everglades Backcountry filming a T.V.show for ReelOutdoors.com with host Chris Bailey. On Thursday the weather was cold and windy we fished up around the Northeast of Whitewater Bay, there are some shallows up there that are usually loaded with Snook and Redfish. This day was no different. The wind was blowing 20 mph out of the North and it made fly-fishing a bit difficult. We continued to work hard and finally located some Snook and Redfish in the Tarpon Bay area. The end of the day total was 18 Snook and 3 Redfish and some Mangrove Snappers and some shots at Tarpon.. Day two was totally different we ended up with only 1 Redfish and a ton of Ladyfish. The low pressure that was sitting just west of us must have had them turned off, because we were in fish all day we just couldn’t get them to respond to the fly. The Snook would just lay there and not budge until we bumped them with the boat.

Florida Bay is good as long as it on the warm side, otherwise look in the deeper holes and channels. I like to bump a D.O.A. Terrorized on the bottom in cold water conditions, it really produces. Snook season opened on Feb. 1 remember 1 per person on the west side of U.S 1.

Tarpon on bait, spin or fly, that’s what going on for the next few month’s if that’s a dream let me make it come true.

Let’s go Catchen,
