Flamingo
The last couple weeks have been windy, really windy. This is when I fish the backcountry of Flamingo a lot. The water has stayed on the cool side and the Tarpon have not really settled in, like I talked about the last couple of fishing reports .As of this writing the weather should start to cooperate. This time of year I like to start everyday by looking for Tarpon when I don’t find them I go Snook fishing. That’s hasn’t been a bad thing. On almost all those trips we caught plenty of Snook running way up in to the Tarpon Bay, Harney and Broad Rivers.
We had days of 30m.p.h. and better and the Snook bite was incredible. The super low tides made the Snook vulnerable. Top water flies and bang-o-lures were how we caught them they were plenty of fun that’s for sure. The Trout bite back there has been very consistent while waiting on the Tarpon to show up in the afternoons. Brett and Brad from Montana fly fished all day 30 plus landing over 20 Snook the biggest 15-18 lbs. Dick, Cameron and Brian all with their first Snook, Dicks was on fly.
On my trips last week the Tarpon were finally active until the wind kicked up, we caught a 70lb fish that day the next day I watched as a friend got one over 150lbs. Hopefully the weather cooperates before they go back out into the Gulf of Mexico.
Miami
The Tarpon are still here. The weather makes it tough, but as long as the wind is not straight east were o.k. Night after night they have been there but one night last week they weren’t. The other fish we catch in and around Government Cut are Snappers, Yellowtails, Grouper, Snook, Jacks, and Blue Runners., plus Trout inside the Bay.
The Bigger Tarpon are starting to eat Crabs: I have been getting a few every trip just in case they’re not eating the Shrimp. Just ask Sam Rose his 90-pound fish destroyed a Crab. On another evening when the Shrimp were none existent we were 3 for 4 on Crabs. It’s only going to get better in April.
The next two months Bonefishing is excellent in Biscayne Bay along with permit and Tarpon on the edge of the flats between Stiltsville and Key Largo.
There are lot of options this month with multiple species to target, give me a call and lets “go catchen”
