Boys of summer

Biscayne Bay

Winter is officially over but the winds are still blowing like they do in March. The wind does make for some tough fishing days but that generally keeps the crowds down. The last couple of weeks have seen some pretty good fishing. The Tarpon have been making their annual migration south. Some days the schools didn’t stop coming thru. The Bone fishing has been on the very good side, everyone is Tarpon fishing and the Bones don’t get overworked. The Evening Tarpon fishing is still very good. These fish will be here for another month.

Flamingo

Snook season closed down here May 1st everything from U.S.1 west is closed. That being said the Snook fishing has been pretty good. During the recent IGFA Inshore Championships, I had plenty of big Snook on the flats in a foot of water. We were fishing on the full moon and sometimes the Snook don’t like to participate. We managed Snook the first 2 days of the tournament along with a 27 in Redfish. The Snook are sitting on the flats, edges of flats and there are a few in potholes. One thing that has been consistent out in Florida Bay is the tides have been very low, lows. This is a good thing because it brings the fish of the flats and actually makes them easier to find. Look in the Tin Can or Snake Bight channel edges. There is plenty of other places to look for the same conditions explore sometimes. The big Trout are around look on the back of the Sting Rays or potholes and troughs where the area is covered with grass and sand holes. The big Tarpon are starting to free jump in the basin out in front of Flamingo. The bait of
choice is a mullet, I’ve caught them on artificial in the early morning the D.O.A Terrorize seems to catch a lot of these Tarpon. Some of these bigger fish have been eating pinfish as of late.

This is the season for the little Tarpon to get in around the Islands. These are fly rod fish from 5-30lbs.

The tournament scene has been busy for me. The IGFA tournament was a top notch run tournament. I thanks Mike Myaat for letting me guide for the IGFA.

On the Redfish Tour we just returned from Titusville where we finished 28th out of 90 boats. We had opportunity but some of those Redfish are spookier than Bonefish. We didn’t hurt ourselves to bad we are still in the hunt for Team of the Year.

I left Titusville at 8pm Saturday, so I could fish the JCC tournament the following day. I had promised to fish it the week before but it got cancelled for weather. I fished it with Dr. Irwin Becker and we had opportunity. We lost a couple Tarpon of fly and then a couple of big Snook but did land a 21inch Trout. This is a backcountry tournament for charity and it takes care of kids, so it well worth the effort.

Tip of The Month
This new lure works well for me it’s called the Storm Suspending Shad. I’ve been using the Pearl and Baby Bass colors. Twitch it and the let it sit. I watched a Snook bolt 5 feet after it. During the JCC tournament we stared out throwing it for Snook and Tarpon. Sad to report all we caught in that spot was 13-16 inch Mangrove Snappers. The list of what I’ve caught in the last week on has grown every time I fish.

The next 3 months get really hot and I’m not talking about the weather.
