| Early bird gets Snook/Tarpon
Fishing has been incredibly good. The key to it is; be early. 30 minutes or so before first light gets you opportunities at Snook and Tarpon, before two things happen boat traffic and the heat its hot 95° air and 87° water and no rainstorms to cool it down at all.
We have been catching most of our fish on lures D.O.A lures, Mann’s Shadow, Storm suspending Shad, spoons, gold and silver.
Here are some of the highlights of the last several weeks; Snook after Snook all on artificial lures mostly the D.O.A. Terrorize (root beer color). The cool part of the fishing out on the beaches this time is you never know what you’re going to hook up.
Tarpon are in the open water just off the beach, look out to the horizon and you will see them free jumping or chasing Mullet. Snook are on the beaches, Tripletail are floating in the rips and seaweed. Permit are active on some of the closer wrecks and piles and occasionally come near shore.
One day this past week while fishing with a Wayne Burns we released 30 Snook, 1Tripletail, 1 Cobia, Jacks, Trout, Ladyfish and Cast our Storm Suspending Shad at Tarpon. The Tarpon just were not interested that day.
On another trip with Pete Brandle we were in a school of Redfish for over 2 hours, this school also had 4lb Bluefish in it as well as some big Jacks and Sharks. We were surprised, it is late in the year to find a Blue fish especially on top of Snake Bite.
On another trip with my Redfish Tour traveling partner Capt.Timmy Shabareck we fished a giant school of Black drum. These Drum are very spooky and always travel with a few Redfish mixed in.
The Everglades needs rain to help cool the water in Florida Bay, normally in June it rains hard enough that we will get a week straight and it will drop water temps. This drives the Snook crazy and they really turn on during that period.
The fishing in Miami is good after dark as well the Snook are in the Inlets spawning and there’s still a few Tarpon around the inlets. During the day there are some Tarpon up in the North Bay.
The tournaments are starting up again. The Miami Sportfishing Club Back Country Challenge is the 17th of July. The tournament out of Flamingo is for the biggest Grand Slam and Club bragging rights. The awards ceremony is at Harris field in the big pavilion.
On June 24th the Redfish Open will be at Papa Joes in Islamorada. The Redfish Tour Pro division will be at Gilberts on the 25th-28 of August, check it out if you get a chance.
The fishing will continue to good thru august. The Tarpon will move in closer to the marina in the next few weeks and the reds will stay schooled up thru the summer. Big Snook aren’t usually a problem the next few months. This is what I consider the best time of year for a Slam, if this is a obsession of yours give me a call.
