| Red Hot Redfishing
It's hot muggy and early morning just imagine throwing your favorite lure! Top water lure fishing is what I'm getting at. No matter if it's a lure or a fly the explosion that follows is heart stopping. On some recent trips the Redfish and Snook have really cooperated the Tarpon fishing hasn't really taken off yet out in Fl. Bay but August usually produces some big fish.
While fishing with Bill Lockart and his grandsons the fish were busting mullet. They cast up there and the grandsons Austin and Westin were rewarded with very large Trout on a Jumpin Minnow. Later on Bill caught a nice Trout and a 30inch Snook out on the beaches while casting a D.O.A.Terrorize. Sue his wife was rewarded with a really nice Pompano. Don't ever overlook using the Terrorize it catches fish!
The following day Bill wanted a Peacock Bass, believe it or not we could find shiners on a Thursday. I had plugs and jigs that Peacocks like, but I decided on a Storm Suspending Shad it looks just like the Shiners I was going to buy. The peacocks weren't abundant that day but Austin did mange a 3lb.Peacock on the Shad
Lets talk about the Reds they have been pretty thick on Snakebite mostly up in the mullet mud's, when the tide starts to fall they are destroying mullet. The busting on top of the flats is incredible to watch.
Last week I fished the Miami Sport fishing Club Challenge, 9 clubs from South Florida competing for club pride. The tournaments goal was a Grand Slam consisting of Tarpon, Snook, Redfish and Trout. The fish were measured and photographed and the team with the most total inches wins. Conditions were tough S.W. winds at 15 making it tough for guys to run out to the beaches.
My partner Mario Hernandez caught a 31inch Snook; I caught a 28inch Redfish, both on topwater before the sun had risen, early in the morning. The Redfish were knocking the plugs out of the water about 2 feet. This was really cool but we were fishing a tournament and we desperately needed the fish to get hooked up. We had for or five boils and then finally a big fish ate Mario's Bagley's finger mullet only to get wrapped up and cut him off, it was a big Snook. I was really nervous; you need to capitalize on those situations. We had several more Snook until Mario caught the 31inch Snook. The Reds were boiling and another club boat next to me caught 3 Reds as I hooked one 28inch Red. The rest of the morning was spent looking for Tarpon and Trout. Mario caught a 44inch Tarpon and I caught a 17inch Trout completing the Grand Slam with 112 inches. We also caught two 5 lb Tripletails, which was a bonus for dinner.
The awards ceremony and BBQ dinner were held at the Harris field Pa and I ended up winning the by 20 inches which was gratifying. There was excellent food a couple kegs of beer and plenty of fish talk among all the clubs. There were Tarpon caught on fly by Omar Marrero and Danny Varona. Most everyone in the tournament caught Snook and Frank Marmin caught his first 3 Redfish.
The luck and good fortune from a week earlier disappeared this past Saturday in Islamorada. I fished the Redfish Open with my buddy Omar Marrero.
The disappointing part is to be on schools of fish that are spooky. First thing in the morning we found a school of Redfish while running to my number 1 spot. I poled and poled and could not catch up to them, finally I gave up and went to the Number 1 spot I was headed to.
Just as expected they were there but nervous. We hooked several Reds but bad things were happening. We had fish follow look at and bump the lures but not pick them up. Finally Omar hooked a really nice Redfish and after a minute or so his line went slack He winded in his line only to have the eye of the hook tied on, the fish crushed it hard enough to break it. A while later a big school humped up and we both cast at it, 2 hits one fish on, the Red ate a spoon again. As we were trying to net him the spoon came flying out. It's really hard to explain how disappointing that is. We stayed on the fish but no luck. I guess I used it all the week before.
I am waiting on my new Man-o-War boat, hopefully by the end of August.
If your interested in catching,Tarpon Redfish and Snook, the next 2 months a great time, all before lunch. Its good time to have some fun. Give me a call and we can set up an experience of a lifetime. 305-333-8149 Capt. jimbo
