| Fall Transition
FLAMINGO The last few weeks have been slow business wise, but I’ve been fishing plenty. Pre-fishing is a big part of the Pro Red Fishing Tour. Fishing the same tides several weeks ahead, sitting watching and waiting for schools or individuals to show themselves. The month of August is normally a very good Redfish month and this year is no different.
The Redfish Tour was at Gilberts in Key Largo the 27-28 of August. My partner and I have been doing our homework for two months. We new where the Redfish were! Here’s the interesting part, No Culling. This means once in the live well; it’s a keeper. Day one, the bite was on early. By 10am and 19 Redfish later we had to make a decision to keep a 5lb fish of which we had a pair. The fish had started to slowdown and the bigger ones didn’t show up. The decision to keep one and upgrade was made we were fishing for higher finish and team of the year points. At the end of day one we ended up only weighing one fish.
Day two, our first spot had someone on it and our second had loads of Tarpon, not what we needed. My partner Timmy said where would you go if you needed a Redfish right now. I told him where I thought we should go an “old faithful” kind of spot, 15 minutes later we caught a 5 lb. Redfish. The area had muds made by Redfish. We fished Exude Crab and Shrimp slowly. Timmy got hit hard we thought this could be it, until the 12 lb. Snook jumped. Not long after the Snook we caught a 4lb. Redfish. It was 9am and again we had one in the well so we let this one go. This is what make long days, we could of went home early and got a few more points with the 4 pounder. That would have been to easy. This day we would find plenty of fish big fish that we really we needed, but could not keep hooked or would spook. Hindsight is we should have kept a couple Reds we released, but our competitive nature doesn’t let you think like that. Ther were others teams in the same boat I guess that justifies it.
The Snook fishing has still been excellent, throwing top water lures early on the flats and D.O.A. Terrorize later in the day when they get deeper on the edges of channels and potholes.
Wayne Burns got a very large Snook on a Jumpin Minnow and 32inch Redfish on a recent trip The small Tarpon have showed up, they are not really thick but enough to target early in the day. There are some bigger Tarpon free jumping in the basin out in front of Flamingo, those big ones like Mullet and big Pinfish. William O’quinn had plenty of shots at Tarpon using soft plastics but we couldn’t keep them hooked up. He ended up catching a little of everything including a 27 inch Ladyfish. I know its only a Ladyfish but it was over 4lbs and pulled plenty of drag. He also had some Snook blow up on the top water . SHARKS, man there are a lot of them. There were 30 Bull Sharks assorted sizes feeding in a mullet mud, they were showering the Mullet. Bait, lure or fly works for them.
Tripletails are working the Rips and heavy grass out west of Flamingo we haven’t caught any big ones mostly around 6 and 7 pounds.
Bonefish will be feeding all day long thru the next few months. Biscayne Bay is world Famous for them as well as the Permit and throw in a couple Snook.
MIAMI We are going to be in the fall transition soon, Don’t forget about the Mullet run coming down the coast. Tarpon, Snooks, Jacks, Trout, Pompano and other get into those Mullet schools
