| Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
First off, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I know a lot of my customers have family in the military and I hope you get to see them real soon. I would also like to thank all of you for patronage by letting me guide you to some angling memories on the water.
The last few weeks have been interesting for my clients and me. I have been breaking in a new shallow water boat and putting my anglers in some good angling opportunities. The Redfish have been plentiful, the fish have not been in large schools but very readily available. In one's or two's it don't matter we will cast at all of them by the end of the day.
Dr. Joe from Cleveland, he never a cast fly rod bigger than a five-weight in a stream, he handled the 8-9 Biscayne with no problem catching Snook, Reds, Jacks and Trout on fly. He and his friend Steve Ratcliff had the hair pulling experience of casting their flies to 100lb Tarpon that weren't interested. Anyone who has Tarpon fished has experienced the same frustration.
On another trip with my daughter Nicole she had a great day a couple big Snook and nice Redfish. She also had shots at Tarpon but no takers again. She caught enough 5lb Jacks to put her asleep on the ride out of the park. All her fish were caught on lures quite an accomplishment.
. Irwin Becker and Roger, Roger was in town and is an excellent fly angler. 4 hours of cruising and tailing Redfish, this was what the "Doctor ordered".
Capt. Bruce Carlton wanted to fish on my new boat so we ventured deep into the backcountry. Tarpon, big Tarpon were everywhere destroying the mullet schools. We were fishing artificial lures and they weren't very cooperative, but we enjoyed the day and went on to catch a slam of Snook, Reds and Trout. Normally, I would net bait and match the hatch, on this day the net was at home. Big mistake!
On a trip with my friend Eric, who wanted to field test my new boat as well got to see how shallow the boat performed hooking several Redfish in the process and a big Snook.
I just returned from St. Pete, were I fished the first leg of the Q nation qualifier. We caught a 6.85 Redfish and decided to go for all the marbles and try to win the Tournament. The weather was not good low 50's very windy and cloudy and then it finally started to rain. This has been the one thing in common for most of our tournaments this year. We ended up the day with 5 Reds and only one big enough to weigh in. We now have points going into the next tournament. The top 15 make the ESPN Redfish Cup, that's were I'm headed!
Remember to book early for the Backcountry Tarpon season these are the monsters I talk about. These Tarpon will normally arrive in mid February and stay thru April. You see I wrote normally, they have already arrived. The cold fronts dictate how long they will stay around.
he Tarpon will also be making their way in to Government Cut in next month. They are looking for SHRIMP! I like to feed them Shrimp. These Tarpon are active day and night, one of the more enjoyable ways to spend an evening is to sit off of Government Cut and fight Tarpon while listening to the music from South Beach.
