| Fish shallow if it's cold
January Fishing Report Flamingo Area
One day it’s cold and then the next it’s back to shorts. The coldest days are where I find Redfish and Snook in holes or troughs kind of bundled up together, if I find them like this we normally catch a few. This January was no different if we the found numbers of fish they seemed to be small but the individuals were larger quality fish. On one rainy day while a cold front was approaching Ted Landway from Michigan stuck it out and trusted my judgment, he ended up the day with Reds up to 7 ½ lbs and a very nice 31” Snook. The same thing occurred for Jim Osborne and his son Jason, they ended up with a couple Snook between 28 and 34 inches. They added an 8lb Black Drum and 23” Trout to their total catch. Tim and Steve Collins wanted to go fishing really badly; it was 40 degrees and 25 knots out of the N.W., that’s cold! They were from up north so it didn’t matter to them, they managed to catch Redfish, Trout and Black Drum.
All the catches listed are on artificial lures; most are on the DOA Terrorize. The Redfish on the flats were caught on gold 1/2ounce Johnson spoons. Just because it is cold really don’t you have to get rid of your lures? The fish congregate and working the DOA Terrorize slowly on the bottom will catch you trophy fish.
On the other hand while out with my son he was fishing with Bait and it rewarded him rewarded him with a really nice 28 “ Redfish and a giant Jack. He also caught plenty of Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish on a fly rod.
While fishing with John McQueston and his buddy Jim, we fished a school of mudding Redfish which just had them loving life. On some other trips we scored plenty of Snook, Reds and Trout running 20 to 30 miles into the backcountry. If you’re up for fly-fishing for Snook this next month will be a good one. If the weather warms up and water temps stay above 70degrees for several days in a row we can expect the giant Tarpon to move into the backcountry. These are aggressive and very large, these Tarpon are coming into gorge themselves before the spawning ritual and can be caught on flies or lures.
Miami Beach The Tarpon season off Miami Beach is in full force, the full moon of the last two months have move plenty of shrimp and the Tarpon have fed well during the evening. The early morning to midday bite should start to pick up this month and don’t be surprised to find large Permit and jumbo Jacks mixed in.
Biscayne Bay The hardest part of this month is deciding where to fish; the Bonefish will be excellent as the weather warms up between fronts. Pick an area and try it out there are plenty of options.
The next couple months offer up great angling opportunities, if your dreaming about catching big fish or would like to catch lots of fish give me a call I’ll make your dream come true. My cell phone is always on 305-333-8149. Don’t forget you can catch my weekly fishing report on “Strictly Snook from Florida”. The shows airs from 7-8 a.m. on ESPN 790 am.
