March fishing report 2005

This year is going really well so far; my partner and have taken a 6th and a15pl in the Q series qualifier for the ESPN Redfish Cup. The top 15 move on and were currently in 4th overall. On March 4-5 we fished the first ever FLW Redfish series event in Sarasota. The weather was cold, rough and windy; I'm almost getting used to it. On day one we fished a school of 300 Redfish in really clear water; we managed 1 fish out of 2 bites. It was large it was disqualified forbeing 1/10 over the slot (we took a chance). Day 2 faired better although we didn't catch our 2 fish until it was time to head in at 2:00pm. We found several schools of fish and they were thick we caught 5 and lost 2 in 15 minutes we weighed in 9-12. This helps because not only are we fishing for money and promoting sponsors we are fishing to qualify for the championship and you need points to get there.

If you happen to look at the Okuma catalog you will notice a picture from my website. It happens to be a very large Tarpon I caught, that my Buddy Eric landing it for me.

Flamingo

The end of February was good, Scattered Reds and Snook started making they way back onto the flats while the weather stayed warm. There has been somewhat of a mullet run going on. On Sat. 022605 was one of those days; I was staked out doing my 5 minutes on the "Strictly Snook from Florida" radio program when the mullet started to get destroyed. The Snook were chasing them from their potholes where they were ambushing them by pushing them up into the mangroves. I raised my power pole and moved into position where we could cast top water plugs. That day I was fishing with Mike Timmony, his top water was getting hit on every cast. This trip was a birthday present from his girlfriend and all he wanted was a big Snook. He lived his dream after numerous blast and jacks beating the Snook to the plug, he finally caught a 33 inch Snook just for good measure he also caught a 27 incher.
The day was interesting between him and his buddy Bob They caught a backcountry slam plus pompano trout redfish ladyfish a hand full of sharks up to 200lbs. If that's not enough, we had shot at Tarpon. This was what fishing Flamingo is all about.

Don and Sandy Blake had interesting morning, I poled them into an area that's been holding schools of really spooky Snook/Redfish. We put down the power pole and sat and watched the fish just swim around us; they were feeding on mullet schools passing thru a pothole. We fished the area for 3 hours only managing several bites but Don did catch a nice Redfish, Sandy had several Snook hit her spoon but then turn off. The fishing was slow this day but we did manage plenty of by catch Trout, Bluefish, Jacks, and Ladyfish. The Sharks were not interested in butter flied Jacks, that just weird!

The Redfishing has been very steady up on the flats and catching 50 to 100 trout has been very easy most days.

The big Tarpon should be arriving in the backcountry any day; all we need is some steady warm weather.

Miami Beach

The Tarpon between Haulover and Government cut has been very consistent. The shrimp runs have been very good, a friend who is a shrimper, said it better than it been in a few years; he says because of all the hurricanes we had.

Bonefishing has been decent on the days its not bitter cold. Look for Permit to start
Showing up on the higher stages of the tide once the water gets above 70 degrees.

GIANT TARPON will be in the backcountry soon they will be there between the end of March thru June, if that not enough there's Snook, Redfish and big Sharks, they all pull drag. Give me a call at 305 -333-8149 and arrange a trip of a lifetime.

A special thanks goes out to Flanagan's seafood bar and grill, for being the sponsor of my Redfish team this year. Look for the Team Maverick/Flanagan's boats up and down the highway soon.

Don't forget "Strictly Snook From Florida" on Saturday mornings at 7:00 am on The Ticket 790 am.

If your looking a for a great enjoyable day on the water catching fish give me a call.

I can't say it enough, thanks to my clients and sponsors for making my business successful. Without you, I would not bein business.
