Fishing report for August 2005
If you are looking for Redfish this is time to do it. They are on the flats, in potholes and cruising the edges on the lower stages of the tides. The Redfish will cruise onto the top of the flats with the incoming tide that's when I'm finding the charging school's that's destroy your lures.
s the time of year where the baby Tarpon are around the islands, great sport on light tackle or fly. If bigger Tarpon is what you prefer they are making their presence known, they are free jumping from the front of Flamingo out into the Gulf of Mexico. The Tarpon are eating live Mullet and the occasional pinfish. There have been trips when we hook plenty but as Tarpon fishing goes we might not land one but its great fun.
Snook fishing has been great, we have been catching them on lures and bait, on some days I am having to catch more bait as the day goes on that's a good thing.
The Tripletails are making their appearance if you never caught one of the 3 tailed pulling machines your missing out. Look for debris as if you were Dolphin fishing, cast a bait or lure past a reel until it goes past the fish and let it drop. Hold on now, because that fish is screaming line off your reel. The best part is they taste great!
Jewfish or Goliath Grouper what ever you call them are everywhere they just don't eat live bait they eat D.O.A Terrorize or Berkley gulps. I have been catching at least one on every trip up to 25 lbs. That may not sound that big but on light tackle it s all you can handle
The FLW Redfish Tournament scene is in full swing I just returned from Venice, Florida area where we had a moderate finish, 53 out 150 teams. We ran 70 miles on the first day to Tampa Bay only to find the REDTIDE moved in over night. The school of 1000 Redfish were split up and not eating. By 10.00 a.m. were frustrated and decided to go back to Sarasota Bay. It didn't take long once we got there we hook 2 fish and ran out of time. We had 50 miles to go in sloppy conditions, our philosophy was we had 2 we need the points to make the championship and try harder tomorrow. We weighed 7-05lbs and had to come up with a plan for day 2. Our decision wasn?t easy because we were going to have to make a 40-mile run in 2-foot onshore chop, but running a Pathfinder 22 Tournament V made the trip possible. Maybe running offshore with my buddies on their big boats makes me not respect 2-foot seas with this Pathfinder 22. I don't know if I was going to fast but I did enjoy passing the Rangers, Century's and Young Boats in the rough water.
We ran back to Sarasota and fished the same area as the day before. At 1200 pm we caught our first fish that' s when they turned on with the incoming tide. I was side by side with 4 other top teams, which had no fish as well, and then it happened. The fish came up onto the flat and turned on every couple of minutes one of us would hook up. The big dilemma time was not on our side we had again a 40-mile ride this time in the intercoastal because it was really windy. The teams started to leave and we were the only ones left, we caught a few more and it was time to leave. Our weight was 10-12 with a total of 17-01. This helped up move up from 52 to 43 in the team of the year race, top 50 make the championship. Our next FLW tournament is Aug 18-19 in Titusville, Fl then on to Lake Charles, La for the ESPN Redfish Cup and then back to Clearwater Fl. Sept 8-9.
If your interested in a fishing trip with me give me a call at 305 333-8149 this is the time of year for big fish down at Flamingo.
