February Fishing Report

warming trend

Flamingo

The fishing has been very good in Everglades National Park. The park service has re-opened the (Flamingo) Fla. Bay side ramp. Every trip seems to produce a fish of quality in Fl. Bay and on any given day we can catch Backcountry Slam.

The fish have been eating live shrimp, the larger shrimp seem to catch larger the fish, go figure. While fishing with David and his mom Mickey we had spooked some Snook on a flat edge, the Snook swam to the back of the flat which made them tough to reach. I rigged a large popping cork on a rod, which would carry an extra 50 feet. The results were a 36-inch Snook that weighed 17 lbs. David ended up with a Backcountry slam catching a couple Reds on Gulp Shrimp and spoons and a few nice Trout. Mickey had a pretty good day of her own she caught a 32-inch Snook and a 10 lb Goliath Grouper, Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish

David Wrightman of and John Tidwell had a good day with some backcountry Tarpon, combined we had 4 on and 1 landed by David. They also caught Trout to 3lbs,Ladyfish, and Jacks, which we turned into Shark bait.

Tony Westfall of Zacrhy construction sets up trips for his company; today we are with Roy a subcontractor. We recently did a couple trips and on one of the days of just catching anything days we put over 100 Trout in the boat. We also jumped 1 large Tarpon, had a nice Flounder and plenty of Jacks and Ladyfish.

I fished a little tournament with a friend Jerry Appling we found fish and watched as another buddy Pete caught them in front of us. We had tough conditions and went on to catch a 12 Trout over 3 lbs but not much else. The Snook weren’t really active may have been to cool that day.

The following day we had 18 boats full of Zacrhy employees, this fun trip ended up being a little bit competitive, the boss John Tidwell put up $3000.00 in Calcutta prizes. Today I have Tony and John and we are determined to get some of that $3000.00. The day started out good with a 17” Redfish and a 32inch Snook by 9a.m., a short time later we had 30 or 40 Trout in the boat plus Ladyfish and Jacks up to 8 lbs. We were going after the Slam because that’s what paid the most money. The Tarpon would not play today and we had plenty of opportunity at them. Now for the one that got a way! Tony had a monster Snook on the new Glow Gulp, which ran down the shoreline and wrapped around a twig, as I reached down to brake the branch the “Big Snook” surged and ran under the boat causing the line to break. This fish was 36 inches easily. We ended up the day with 8 big Snook and loads of other fish. At the weigh our Snook was 1 inch smaller than the winning Snook. This was a great day and all 18 boats caught fish of some sort.

Backcountry Tarpon are in as of this writing 2/26/06The Tarpon moved into Whitewater Bay this past week; these big fish are eating everything in sight including plugs and flies. If a big Tarpon get you excited then this Tarpon fishing is for you.

Miami

The Tarpon fishing has been pretty consistent for the month, the one thing that has been a little different is they have been eating during the daylight hours better than after dark. The bite has been between 7-10 a.m. and 4-6p.m. this will eventually change. Super bowl Sunday with Nick and John their team wasn’t playing and decided Tarpon fishing might be more fun. It was cold but the Tarpon were rolling just south of Haulover inlet, I gave them both a D.O.A Glow Shrimp and told them to lead the school. We had several swirls at the bait and then finally a 70lb Tarpon erupted in the sky. Nick held on the fish jumped a couple of times and then wore thru the leader. The weather got cold and the fish disappeared on us but the one gave Nick the thrill of a lifetime.

Down around Government Cut the action has been getting more consistent. One day they’re on the beach and the next they are in the inlet depending on water temps. The season is moving on and water temps are staying above 70, which we need to keep them active.
While Tarpon fishing in the cut we are catching a little bit of everything Snappers, Jacks Grouper and I saw a nice Permit caught by a buddy. The Snook are in there and I’ve seen a couple caught during daylight hours, which is uncommon. We have been bouncing the Berkley Shrimp in there on the bottom get as much action as a live Shrimp. On a recent trip with Eddy Carmen owner of Biscayne Rods and Tom his good buddy in for the boat show, we hooked a couple on Gulp Shrimp (new penny color) and nothing on the live Shrimp.

The fishing is getting better and everyday as the water temperature warms up it gets more consistent. If your looking for a great day on the water let me help, whether it’s Snook, Reds, Tarpon or Bonefish give me a call at 305 333 8149 and lets catch a fish of a lifetime.
