March 2006 fishing report

Tarpon, Tarpon ,Tarpon

It's March 14 and the Tarpon bite has been really good. The days that the wind isn't crankin the Tarpon have been cooperating.

3-3-06 Drew his girlfriend and buddy John had a great day. Everytime I turned around they were hooked up, a total of 18 hooked Tarpon and 4 released fish, the small Tarpon was 80 lbs this day.

3-4-06 The following day Tony from Zachry constuction his buddy and a boss had 11 hookups with a couple of doubles and 3 big Bull Sharks interupting the Tarpon bite.

3-10-06 Very windy we ran over from Key Largo, Dick and his son Jim from Boston had 3 really good days with me On the first day we caught Snook up to 32 inches and lost one bigger. Dick also caught a 23 inch Redfish, Trout, Jacks, Ladyfish, Tripletail and Sharks lots of fish in the boatthis day.

3-11-06 Day 2 we started out in Whitewater Bay with very little wind. Right off the bat Jim hooked up a 80 Tarpon that was really hot. This Tarpon ran and jumped around the boat for about 12 minutes before he thru the lure. Not to long after that Dick hooked a 90 pounder another hot fish He held on for about 10 minutes and Tarpon thru the plug again. The wind picked up and we made a long run way up to Tarpon Bay area where we hooked lots of Snook, the largest was a 31 inches.

3-13-06 On day 3 we fished Biscayne Bay for Bonefish, it was really windy and cloudy, making it tough to see. We fished for everything we started out the day with Ladyfish, Trout and Jacks around the marina. Once we got over to the flats we started seeing other species like Cudas Sharks and Bar Jacks all of which pull plenty of line off the spool. We had one Shark Spool us on his initial run, Dicks rod was heavy with heavy line. We did get into some Bonefish but nervousness and jitters got the best of Dick. We had a fish on a ray mud dick made the cast and the fish ate the crab unfortunately Dicks hook set was to hard and pulled the hook.

3-16-06 Todd was in from Minnesota we fished the afternoon in south Biscayne Bay, We had a dead low incoming tide, only saw a few Bonefish we did manage a Shark and in a short afternoon trip. Todd played with the Ladyfish in the marina on fly tackle he go a kick out of there hits

3-18-06 fishing again today with Todd, hid Dad Jim and mom Judy. We were up in Whitewater Bay looking for Tarpon I had convince Todd this would be a great trip. Finding the Tarpon early was difficult, but they did should up. while looking for them I notice a different type of tail sticking out of the water. cobia's in Whitewater Bay I've heard of things like this; but it has never happened to me. Their were 2 Cobias just frolicking on the surface, both Jim and Todd cast. Jim hooked up fought the Cobia for about 15 minutes and we lip gaffed him. We measured it, 37 inches, weighed it 17lbs and photographed it and I'm eating it tonight. Thats just the way it goes sometimes. not long after that Judy screams I got one! Right about then 80-90lbs of jumping Tarpon comes out of the water. Judy fought the fish for 35 minutes we got it next to the boat and got some photos great catch on 10 test and 30 leader. Judy followed all instructions and landed that fish with out a problem. todd had one other Tarpon hit his lure and let it go as fast. The Tarpon turned off and we chased othe species we ended up with 30 Trout, Ladyfish, Jacks and later Todd caught a real nice Bull Shark about 70lbs, This was a great trip with great people!

03-21-06
Tonight, i fish with Josh and a couple of his work buddies. We fished Government cut for Tarpon, the bite was slow early but we managed a few snook bites catching and releasing 1 nice one. The guys caught several Snappers and Groupersbut no Tarpon.

03-22-06
I fished the Chockoloskee backcountry today with John and his teenage son. Right off the bat John caught a nice 27in Redfish, the weather conditions made it tough but we managed to catch every thing ending up the day with a monster Bull Shark. John and his son had a great day onthe water.

I stayed on the west coast for ten days fishing the redfish nation tournament were we finished 16th and the the FLW. This was my worst finish ever and I'm dying to make up for it.

While I have been in the backcountry the Beach Tarpon have
been on fire. I am available for that during the next few months.

The next couple of months the Tarpon are thick; either in the backcountry or on the beaches off of Miami Beach. The Snook fishing has been great with lots of 30 inch fish. It only going to get better. The Redfishing has been slow but we seem to manage a few here and there. Bonefish and Permit are going to be in good supply going in to spring the waters are warming and our cold fronts have very littl effect on cooling the water anymore.

In May the Tarpon start pushing their way down south from Government Cut down the ocean flats towards the Keys.

As you can see we have a lot of fishing to do and not enough days in the week, man thats cool!

If this gets your blood boiling call me at 305-333-8149. I will make it the trip of a life time.
