June 2006 fishing report
Flamingo
June was a good month. The boat ramp to Fl. Bay is closed for dredging; the easiest way to get there is to run over from the keys, which is what I’ve done several times this month. Flamingo in the “Hot” summer months offers some incredible small Tarpon fishing and the Snook are stacked up on the flats and on the edge of the flats. I have used my new Maverick HPX to pole these flats and take advantage of this fish in the shallow water. The weather has been typical summer pattern hot and muggy in the morning and the fish are aggressive, top water lures have been the key.
Miami Beach-North Biscayne Bay The Tarpon fishing off Miami is still going strong; normally the fish are on move north by 4th of July. The Trout fishing in Biscayne Bay is good the fish aren’t giants but they keep us busy, 30 Trout are not uncommon. Along with the Trout, there are Snook, Jacks, Cuda’s and plenty of Mangrove Snappers.
06-06-06 Alex emailed me from 30000 feet to tell me he was ahead of schedule and would be arriving early. We had 2 days of as much fishing as possible to do. While netting mullet, some tarpon rolled. I rigged up a Gulp shrimp and Alex cast in front of them. “Fish on” Alex had a little 10lb Tarpon jumping out of control; this is what he was there for, the Tarpon jumped off after a few minutes. With a live well full of Mullet and Crabs w were prepared for the evening Tarpon bite. We ran to the dock and picked up his buddy, Rick was waiting at the dock for us. We made a run offshore to look Dolphin but first we trolled up some small Bonita’s for bait. We happened on an area of bait with predators busting up the bait. After catching the Bonita’s we bridled them for trolling, it didn’t take long and one bait was hit and cut in half; possible Shark. These small Bonita’s make great, Sailfish, Wahoo and Kingfish baits. We did this for a couple hours and ended up with a Dolphin a giant Cuda, which ate the Dolphin, we had a double cut off consistent with Wahoo in the area.
It’s 5pm time for Tarpon! We set up a drift right off of Penrods on South Beach. It didn’t take long and Rick was hooked up with a 70 lb Tarpon on a spinning rod. He fought the fish for 35 minutes, got the leader release and broke him off. Once the sun started to set the conditions got right and the bight was on. Alex hooked a monster; the fish jumped and we were between 2 other boats that were hooked up. Our fish kept running taking every inch of line as we tried to make it around the other boats. This fish finally beat the odds and came off. We set up our next drift and it didn’t take long, as we were putting our baits out I noticed the line peeling off Rick’s spool. I said you’re on; close the spool. He passed the rod to Alex and for the next 2 hours Alex had his hands full this was a large Tarpon which pulled us from the south side of the inlet across to north in and out of Government Cut and out to Sea. Big boat wakes rough seas and Alex held on trying to land this big fish on 15 lb test. We had the giant Tarpon next to the boat 10 times and she would surge away, finally the line gave. Alex was exhausted and we had to early tomorrow.
06-07-06 This morning we met down in Homestead, we were targeting Tarpon, Bones and Permit on My new Maverick HPX 18. Getting shallow is important and this new boat does it quietly. Our first stop was for Bonefish, they were schooled up and coming at us they were very tough to see in the conditions. Alex and Rick made some good cast, but no luck; the Bones couldn’t find their crabs. We moved out on to Ceasers Bank, the Tarpon pour thru this area during May-June. Today was no different, they were coming thru steady and we had some really good shots on top of the flat. This is one of the most frustrating situations there are, when you can spot them make the cast and have them look at your crabs and not eat it. We did this for a couple hours and saw a lot of fish and actually had one go after a crab. There were a couple other boats there and no one else had any hook ups, that tells you something is up.

Every once in a while I get to fish an offshore tournament for the Sea Vee boats team. When my buddy Eric called I said yes, they always get some drag pulled in this series. Day one, The Gauntlet this is a team on team format. We ran from Hillsboro Inlet to Jupiter inlet “smoking’ all the other boats, 55 mph in a 34 ft. boat. This is more important to the owner than winning “best performance sells boats”. We caught plenty of Kingfish; Ariel the owner of the company caught a 40lb and Nate Ramasinni caught plenty of smaller one we ended up with 57 lbs. we lost our heat by 13lb.s with the 10 minimum we had 2 just under.
06-10-06 Day 2- The Shootout, we learned something yesterday and were going to use it today. Our first bait in the water got hit on the drop back, it was a 15 lb Kingfish a good way to start. We had good action all morning right of the bat I caught a 20 lb King so we are confident! The day continued the same; plenty of Kingfish, but we needed another specie to help our chances of placing high. We decided to move offshore a bit looking for Dolphin, Wahoo or Tuna. The wind kicked up allowing us to fly our kites; this was key the day before and again today. Eric who is very big starts yelling fish on this fish smashed a goggle on the kite, the fish made big run and we were optimistic. Below the boat we saw the flash of the tuna, man we were excited now. This tuna ended up taking big tuna honors 25.6lbs. It not over Eric catches another Tuna 21lbs. and the back rod goes off it chaos, at one point 3 guys are on going different directions. We missed another Tuna, which would have helped the cause. We took 4th place out of 100boats.
06-14-06 North Biscayne Bay with my kids and their friend, Trout Jacks and some nice mangroves.
06-17-06 On a trip with friend and sponsor Eddy Carmen from Biscayne rods and his buddy Ben we had a spectacular morning 25 Snook on assorted lures. These Snook were schooled up in 4 or 5 different areas we targeted. Not that they were tired of Snook but we went looking for Tarpon and Reds only to find more Snook. This is not a problem I’m complaining about. We did manage to find Redfish only to have Snook beat them to the lures. We ended up catching Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish, as well this was a great day.
062006-Today I took my brother and his son Mark and my son shark fishing. We started out catching bait Ladyfish Jacks and Cuda’s. Mark had never really caught anything big and wanted a Shark. We went to south Biscayne Bay and set up with our chum, not long after they started to pour in. Marked weighs about 35lbs and had his hands full with a 45 lbs shark pulling drag and resisting his attempts to pull him to the boat. Mark caught the Shark and we took some photos and released it. Big Smiles are what this business is all about!
06-21-06 This morning I’mwith Scott Dave and Jeff we started early because the guys had an 11o’clock flight. It didn’t take long and we were hooked up to a 70 lb Tarpon got a leader release and broke him off. We set up and did it again and had a 120 lb Tarpon in the air, that’s what I love to see. This fish covered some ground jumped and threw the circle hook. We set up and then caught this one a mean 70 Tarpon that wouldn’t give up and broke a rod during the fight.
06-22-33-06 Pre-fishing for the IFA Redfish Tour event Ft Myers. Normally you find a lot of Snook in pre-fishing the west coast its kind of a bonus and this trip was no different. I found a real nice area with some perfect tournament Reds and just watched them.
06-24-06 Tournament day we ran to spot #1 and the fish weren’t there, yet! We worked it really hard, having over cast skies normally helps on the west coast when using artificial lures. We decided to go to anther spot we like which was right across from it we ended up catching one 3lbRedfish. I was poling the shoreline and kept looking over a spot # 1 and finally decided to go back. We caught anther fish there 2.61lbs, nothing special the bigger ones were not interested. That was our weight for the tournament. We ended up 33rd out of 87.
06-26-06 Kevin O’donnell and his family wanted to go fishing. I took them out and his son Colin hooked a 70 tarpon that fought him for 45 minutes, he was a good angler and did a good job on that fish. That was the only bight so we went Trout fishing in the bay, they caught close to 40 Trout, I know this because the kids kept count as all kids do!
06-27-06 My buddy Eric and I went Tarpon fishing, the bight was good but not for us. We watch 2 other boats hook up but not us “that kills me”!
This is the time of year for baby Tarpon, the will eat lures or flies. The great part in this scenario is there will be very little pressure on them over at Flamingo, with the ramp being closed. If you dream of catching Snook, Reds, Tarpon, Bonefish or Permit give me a call at 305-333-8149, I will give you the opportunity to fulfill your dream.
