August 2006 fishing report
As of 08-19-06 Florida Bay ramp re-opened. It is now easier to access the Flamingo area.
I only have a couple of reports for the Month of July. The days I fished Flamingo were excellent; I actually took the month off. I was either pre fishing for a tournament or fishing a tournament itself and I played a lot of golf. 5 tournaments in 8 weeks that’s a lot of days on the water, I know there’s a lot of guys who would take my job in a second, but I’m enjoying too much!
The Florida Bay ramp is still closed but should open soon, there’s a lot of fish that haven’t been touched for months out there. The fishing out along the Gulf of Mexico and in the rivers has been outstanding Tarpon have been thick and eating a variety of lures, the Gulp shrimp and the Catch 2000. The Snook have really been cooperating and there’s been plenty of Redfish
My fishing buddy Bruce and I went deep into the backcountry to Tarpon Bay, I do not normally fish the backcountry in the summer because Florida Bay is too good and too close to pass up. Snook, Reds and Trout in unreal numbers all on artificial lures, 3 backcountry slams a piece; that’s good fishing!
Kevin, and his son Will who is 8 years old and Joe wanted to catch fish, all of them. We started out in an area holding Tarpon, Ladyfish, Jacks and Mackerel. Joe hooked up and jumped one off, then Will got one a 25 pound. After about 20 minutes we had him boat side and released him, I think his dad got a photo. Will wasn’t thru he had another opportunity with a little bit bigger fish and this one jumped off. We ran to a creek, which had been holding some big Snook and plenty of Reds, Kevin caught a nice 26-inch Redfish. It was lunchtime so we anchored on an Oyster bar. I had some live Ladyfish in the well and decided to catch something big. We had 14 baits and 14 bites every one was big. We lost a lot of fish for some reason; and all our baits came back scaled. There’s only 2 fish that scale baits Snook and Tarpon, we had a couple fish pull serious drag but just let go. I was not using a circle hook that’s probably a big reason why. Will ended up with a big shark that dragged us around for a long time and after 20-30 minutes bit thru the wire leader. Hopefully it was a memorable trip for Will.
A couple days later my lifelong friend Eddy was in town, we try to get out every time he comes in. Whenever the Tarpon bite is good I will spend all my time catching them or at least trying. Eddy’s son Christian had a couple great Tarpon the first around 40lbs and the second just a little smaller. He also caught a 70lb. Bull Shark. We spent most of this day running and hiding from lightning storms but ended up having a great day. It’s funny all the things that we remember from when we were kids.
Most of my fishing has been done in tournaments; I have caught plenty of Redfish this month from Titusville to Fernandina Beach. I have spent almost a month in the Fernandina Beach area great place to vacation.
On day one in the FLW in Fernandina we were in 2nd and fell to 30th on day 2 our fish just didn’t eat and the ones that did were small
IFA in Titusville was frustrating we lost 3 fish that really could of helped place higher we weighed just under 8lbs finishing 35th
Redfish Nation Series- Fernandina Beach, our fish cooperated and the weather was stable, again on day 1 we were in 3rd place. On day 2 we woke up to a cold front, yes a cold front in mid August. Cool winds at 25 mph out of the North ruined our game plan. The Redfish were there but would not eat we caught one early and he was 30 inches just a little long for the tournament. We cast at tailing Reds all day long, we had Reds with there whole backs out of the water. When I say I was frustrated it’s an understatement, we needed to make the top 5 to qualify for the Redfish Nation championship.
The great part of being in top 5 on day one is you get a lot of attention; plenty of cameras and exposure for us and our sponsors. This year we got our pictures taken on day one. Our goal for next year is both days both days.
I’m back to work as this writing 8-14-06, the Tarpon are in down at Flamingo, so are Snook, Redfish. The Bonefish and Permit are in Biscayne Bay and have been plentiful.
If you want a great day on the water with a friend or family members let me be your guide. If you’re in town on business we can do evening trips for Tarpon/ Snook right in downtown Biscayne Bay. Let me fill your fish wish list, give me a call at 305-333-8149
Let's go catch'em Capt Jimbo
