Business has been rather slow and my Redfish tournament schedule is over, but the fishing has been outstanding. The small Tarpon are plentiful, the Redfishing in early September was as good as anyone could ever remember it and there are plenty of Snook. The Bonefishing and Permit fishing are steady in Biscayne Bay as they always are. 9-2-06 Anthony had his dad Dennis and buddy Mike out for a day. On the first cast Mike hooks a nice Snook (sometimes that’s the kiss of death) but not today. Shortly after Dennis hooks a couple smalls ones and then a Redfish. The Reds were cruising the area but not interested in our lures. They ended up the day with a mix of species including a couple big Sharks, 30 or so Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish. 9-09-06 Matt and Greg are in the military and needed some stress relief, that’s exactly what we did. We started out with some small Tarpon, mixed in with a bunch of small Snook and Redfish just what the General ordered. They had a fun packed day that ended Shark fishing; if they wanted big fish they got them, 7 sharks the smallest was around 70 lbs. Matt hooked a Spinner Shark that put on an aerial performance that they will remember. Matt also had a large (very large) Snook on and pulling drag. The Snook ate a live bait on a circle hook and just came free after pulling for 30 seconds. It makes you scratch your head! I told them, I would wear them out; I think I got close it was a great day. 091406 Today I fished with my buddy Bruce, just for fun and to figure out a couple things. The weather was bad; we had west winds, which shut down the fishing and plenty of storms moving thru. The positive side was we had a large area full of Tarpon in the 100 lb range. Bruce hooked a couple on a jerk bait, but that was it. There were schools of bait being chased by Mackerel and Ladyfish. We had some live mullet, which the Tarpon ignored but the Bull Sharks loved. We constantly had doubled up rods for an hour, these Bull Sharks were 150-200 lbs. We had enough of the Sharks and went back to throwing lures on a shoreline. Bruce caught a Snook and I had a Tarpon to end the day. 09-18-06 today I was part of a group charter out of Key Biscayne, which Started at 1 p.m., it was 90 degrees this makes for some tough catching conditions. I had caught some bait and put them out for some rolling Tarpon. We sat there for an hour with no bites; I had enough. I told the guys let go. The bite was slow and I went from spot to spot, we finally ended up in Stiltsville on school of Jacks 6-9 lbs. This is was what they wanted line screaming off the reel. They caught somewhere around 25 to 30 fish and were very happy. On the way home I had some baits left and stopped off at Government Cut, 4 out of 6 mullet got ate. Two by big Jacks and the other two I never saw on the fish. It wont be long the before the mullet run arrives and the action around the inlets get crazy! 09-20-06 Today I'm fishing with a customer who has turned into a really good friend; Sergio. Two years ago he had never fished the back-country or flats now he can hold his own. Today we are on Tarpon, lots of Tarpon. His first cast he jumps a fish then I hook one, for 3 hours we stayed in the area casting and watching what the fish were doing. I actually have a tournament in 3 from this day and I’m pre-fishing as much as putting Sergio on fish. We ended up the day with 15 tarpon some nice Snook bites and a solid plan for Saturday. 09-23-06 Today is the annual Miami Sport fishing Club Back-country Challenge, my partner is T. J. he is and offshore angler with plenty of skill. We mix up partners not to stack the deck. He asked me what our game plan is on the ride; I said I wasn't sure I had two. We arrived at the boat ramp early no one else had launched this was important! I could get into my first spot with out any seeing me and I wouldn't get blocked out by traffic on another spot leading into the area I want to fish. Lines in at 6:30 am we were set up at 6 am in the dark, the Snook were busting all around us. We finished rigging our Gulps and Rapala Twitching Raps and then had a couple donuts. I asked him what time is it he said 6:34 am I asked what he was waiting for. It wasn’t long after sun up that the Tarpon arrived; I am on the same pattern as 090906. Our first fish was a small Trout 16 inches but he counted we jumped several Tarpon and caught 3 Snook but all were just under the 27 in limit. TJ hooked a nice fish, it was pulling plenty drag when we measured that Snook he was a hair short of 27. I had a stingray mudding on the flat I thru the Twichin Rap on the ray and a big Snook inhaled it; he shook his head and cut the 40 lb tannin colored fluorocarbon leader from Stren. I re-rigged another Twichin Rap and thru into a trough another big hit only to pull drag and then let go, it fought like a Redfish but who knows. We followed the Tarpon up and down the channel we had 13 bites that day catching only 2, but they were 33 and 31 inches respectively and with our 16 Trout we had 80 inches. I told TJ there was no way we would win today we might take second or third if we are lucky. Well I must be living right; the Snook bite although very good most were under the 27-inch limit. Our tally on the total fish caught was incredible, 4 Snook 2 Tarpon 3 Reds 4 Trout that’s 2 “Grand Slams”even if some fish were small. Our two Tarpon did the trick and we won with them, staying with the bigger fish paid off for us. The talent is very good and the competition between the clubs for “Club Pride” is awesome. The Host club won and South Dade Anglers took second. The awards ceremony was at Gheckos in Homestead, the food was good and the beers cold and the camaraderie was great! 0902606 I am trying to catch my buddy Sergio a Tarpon he’s snake bit on this one. Today I’ fishing one of the bites at Flamingo; there are Tarpon everywhere today! Sergio cast a jerk bait and it got hit 9 times on the way back in, this is what he wanted. The Tarpon were feeding on Shrimp, we watched as they chased them on the surface, sure wish I had a fly rod today. Some time it’s hard to duplicate what they're eating when it’s that small, we had several more bites but they were eating the tails only. Time for Redfish, I poled the flats in search of Reds. I tell Sergio look 75 ft there’s a tailer! He made a cast and his bait fowled up, so I cast and hooked up the Red. After releasing the fish another fish came our way some were spooky some ate; Sergio hooked one and it took off he fought for a bit and thru the hook. The tide was about done so we left for Tarpon; again. We found assorted size Tarpon and Sergio hooked up again, after a while the fish threw the lure. He then hooked another Tarpon, which pulled like a truck and came off. I told you he was “snake bit” this happens in fishing with plenty of people that’s what makes them come back. 092906 Today im fishing with Rich and Ralph, there are on fishing and golfing trip. We started by casting at Tarpon, the conditions changed today as our first front made its was thru. Cool and breezy is what we had better than 80 first thing in the morning. The Tarpon weren't as thick as they had been for the last 2 weeks; but still enough to cast at for 2 hours. We only mange to get 1 bite from the Tarpon which is disappointing, and Ralph although was excited he would of like to have caught him. Rich and Ralph did manage a few Trout, Jacks and Redfish while in that area.
We moved on and went Snook fishing, casting topwater plugs in really shallow clear water. Rich was first to get several hits and finally caught a 4lb Snook. We had more hits and a few more Snook before the tide dropped out completely. We went back and looked for some Tarpon and big sharks the guys had enough so we ended the trip. All in all no big tropy's but plenty of fun fish!
We are getting ready for our fall mullet run any day now, as soon as we get a cold front with some N.E. winds to drive them south. This will bring all kind of baits and in turn the predators Tarpon, Snook, big Jacks and plenty of other species. If you are staying on Miami Brach this is a prime area to watch for this, it will filter south thru Haulover Bridge in N. Biscayne Bay and then to S. Biscayne Bay and the Keys. This happens on both coasts. We are getting to the prime catching time of the year, when fish get into comfort zones and feed because- the bait is everywhere and 2 they are getting fat for the winter. If I got your desire up to go catching that’s good, there’s plenty of it to do and not enough time to do it.
