Report for week of 03-30-03 thru 04-06-03

Winter returns

03-29-03
The weather has been interesting the last couple of weeks, right when we thought summer was here we got blasted with a cold front. It actually dipped to the low fifties, but before the front came thru the Permit fishing was red hot. I fished with brothers Steve and Walter Lomendola and their dad Jose in Key Largo. We started out the morning with a school of big Jacks in the 20 lb.range. Walters first cast lead to a hook up. He fought the big Jack for 6 or 7 minutes and the plug came free only top have some thing else eat it. The something else appeared to be a Mutton Snapper which fought for a few seconds and ran into a ledge and broke us off.

Once we got up on the flats and started poling we noticed plenty of sharks and cudas. Steve had asked if we could catch some snappers for dinner. I told him he was in luck because the point we were on holds plenty. After catching 25 or so they kept 5 each. They were all around 12-16 inches. We move down the flats only to find more of the same. We hooked a couple more cudas and finally came across two 25 lb Permit which apparently saw us first. It was only 10 o’clock and we already had a pretty interesting morning. We stuck with it and it paid off, we finally got into some Permit and Bonefish. On one another occasion we had 2 Permit turn on a crab that was perfectly cast only to have a 6 foot Bull Shark chase them and eat the Crab, that didn’t last long. Then there were the 12 –15 Permit sitting on the edge of the flat just daring us to throw at them. The one that finally ate was interesting also. Walter made a good cast, the Permit turned and ate the Crab but he didn’t get a hook set. Steve made a second cast that was short by 10 feet. I told Steve to wind it up and make a second cast, the permit started to charge the crab that’s when I told Steve to stop the crab and let it swim to the bottom. The Crab didn’t make it far, the Permit ate it and the rest is history as they say. Steve caught his first Permit a 15 lb fish. He also added a 100 lb Bull shark to end the day.

I fished the Key Largo Guides Association Ghost Hunt Tournament held out of Snappers Waterfront Saloon. The proceeds are donated to Diabetes foundation. I fished it with long time friend and Key Largo resident Jim Prince. It was and Unbelievably tough day, we never saw our first Bonefish until 12:30. We had school of mudding fish and because of the glare Jim could not make out the mud in time. After that it was like the above report nothing but Permit for the rest of the day. I was unable to make the awards dinner due to a little league tournament I rushed home for but I heard other teams had the same frustrating day. 4 Bonefish won the tournament

I fished with Alex at Flamingo. We started out looking for Snook and Tarpon We found the Snook but they did not want to cooperate, only one fish showed any interest but turned off at the last second. We were on top of the flats fishing Mullet muds, Sting Ray muds, potholes and cruising fish. The fish were busting mullet all around us but would not hit alex's lure. it took a while but we finally found plenty of fish. Alex ended the day with 20 Trout up to 3lbs. most that he sight casted to. He actually worked a Sting Ray mud where he had a strike; about 20 minutes later he pulled a real nice Redfish off the Ray. It was very windy 20-25 mph when the tide went out it went out hard. I took Alex to have some non-stop catching, Jacks Ladyfish and Trout for an hour. Alex wanted more so we went Shark fishing. We put out some baits and looking for some Bull Sharks it wasn’t long we had we had two rods hooked up going 2 different directions. We fought one for 20 minutes losing it at boat side. We also hooked and lost a big Snook while Shark fishing.

This upcoming weekend April 11-13 is the Herman Lucerne Memorial Backcountry Tournament held out of Flamingo Marina inside of Everglades National Park. Look for the results next week. Fishing could be tough with a cold front and heavy winds forecast. This tournament is for bragging rights between the anglers and the guides who fish Flamingo regularly.

Fishing is only going to get better thru the next month. For the ultimate fishing trip give me a call.
