Getting better

June 2007

In my report last month I wrote about getting back into a normal wind pattern, I did not think we would already have 3 tropical systems come though. The winds have been consistently “blowing”! The fishing has been very good despite the wind; the mornings seem to be producing plenty of Snook, Reds and even a few small Tarpon down at Flamingo.

The fishing in Government cut has been tough because of the winds, but the nights we are able to fish there have been Tarpon and Permit. This is the time of year the Snook move in to the inlets to spawn so that’s next on the agenda.

South Biscayne Bay should be loaded with Tarpon but having the right weather to get out on the ocean side flats has been tough. The Bonefishing has been good and some Permit being caught.

This month is usually when the Tarpon move into Florida Bay they can range from 5 lbs. up to 150lbs throw in some Snook and a couple Redfish this makes for a fun day. The Tripletails will be out in the Gulf of Mexico these make a fine meal. The one Specie we can’t forget in the warm months are the Sharks, Bulls, Lemons, Black Tips, Sand, Bonnets and occasionally the Hammerhead or Tiger They will normally make an appearance when there’s a good Tarpon or Snook bite. There is no shortage of action just pick a couple species and go after them. Last year we had no mosquitoes in the park but that’s not the case this year, they are back in force. This leads to the old saying “ if the bugs are biting so are the fish”. The warmer it gets the better the Redfishing that is another thing we have to look forward to.

I am fishing with my Russian comrades again today, I would say we went fishing but the reality is they only want to catch. On every cast they expect to hook something, they do not care about species just catching. There’s no bad species in their minds. The love to Shark fish and so do I, what they really like is catching the bait Jacks and Ladyfish. Paul had a couple big Sharks hooked up he finally caught a big Bull Shark. When you use 3-5 lb baits the fish that eat them have some weight as well. We landed Paul’s 150lb Bull and took some photos boat side; Alex was up next. The butter flied Jack was in the water 3 minutes when the reel started screaming and 25 minutes later we released a 6-½ foot Lemon Shark. These guys never get tired of catching but they said “ hey Capt Jimbo how long to get back to dock”. These guys were finally satisfied!

Jack and Larry are on board today and we are fishing Biscayne Bay for Tarpon Permit or Bonefish. The winds are up and the ride across the bay wasn’t fun but we managed to get out on the ocean side flats. The cloud cover and high water made our visibility tough but as we staked out and waited a school of Tarpon swam in front of the boat. Jack got a cast but the Tarpon swam away. The cloud cover was so bad I had to resort to chumming for Bonefish, which produced a bunch of Bonnet, head Sharks and big Boxfish. The rainsqualls and winds were moving thru like a freight train. We made a move across the bay I explained the area and what would happen. It did not take long and the bones started to tail. These are big Bonefish 10lbs and up and there were a bunch of them. The one problem I had was slowing the boat down which is a great reason to own a Power Pole, which I have not got yet. The wind was blowing so hard the boat was making a wake! Jack and Larry both made several cast at tailing fish, but the fish would spook. The conditions were deteriorating so we called it a day.

Today I’m with Glen, Danny and Brett at Flamingo; we managed some Snook, Reds and Trout. We ran around the traps and markers and had a dozen shots of Tripletails but they would not eat.

061807 Today I was out with my kids and their friend in North Biscayne Bay we started out by sight casting to some really big Tarpon. The Tarpon were laid up on the banks of the intercoastal; we had some really good cast at still targets but only managed a few Barracudas. The Tarpon were large and a couple of them were over the 150lb mark. We finished off the day by catching Trout, Jacks and Cuda’s.

062007 Today I’m at Flamingo with Don and Gary, they both moved from Miami to west palm and miss fishing here in the Park. Today was a beautiful day no wind and the tide was incoming and we were looking for Snook, Reds and Tarpon up tight in the mangroves and in the potholes. I had them throwing the Twich n Rap, Don was first to catch with a small Snook, a Red and then another Snook. The twich n rap wasn’t producing like it usually does so I rigged a couple of Gulp Jerk baits on 1/8-ounce jig heads. Gary had 4 cast straight where he caught Snook and Reds the fish were definitely feeding on the bottom today. Don wasn’t through he caught several more and the jabs of who’s fish is bigger continued. The tide was dropping as I poled off the flat we were on, they easily could have caught more fish but it was time to get a slam and we needed a Tarpon. The Tarpon had been around all morning but they did not respond to their lures. It was time to make a run to a spot that has some small Tarpon that are usually cooperative. I checked a spot that usually holds a couple schools of Redfish on the way to the Tarpon spot and as usual they were waking, humping up and flashing pretty good. I poled hard to get to them, I had to catch them from behind which is not easy to do. Gary fired a spoon and Don a Twitch n Rap we had a double hook up of big Redfish! The fish were 31 and 32 inches and fought really hard. The guys were pumped, but the school was long gone.
Time for a Tarpon I poled in and as I did there were a school of Tarpon moving away quickly! I poled down a shoreline looking for rolling fish but before I could say anything Gary had a Snook, not to be out done Don caught one right after Gary. The Tarpon were rolling but would not eat that’s Just Tarpon fishing. We tried one more spot which had a big mullet mud running thru it, the mullet were getting busted up real good but I couldn’t get up because it was just to shallow. I poled around the outside edge of the flat and we did see some monster Snook and Don had a big one chase down his spoon but none were caught. The sun was high the heat was on and we called a day, another exiting day at Everglades National Park.

062407 Today’s group is Alex his son Alexis and friend Angel. I ran to an area that has been productive for me lately, the mullet schools are humongous and there is a lot of activity in them. We were fishing for about an hour when Alex opened up his cooler, lying right on top was a bunch of BANANA’s! I told him BANANA’S are bad luck and to throw them out he said he didn’t believe me and proceeded to eat one and give one to Angel. I said it’s proven that the fishing will if fact Suck as long as we have BANANA’S on the boat. His son pleaded with him to throw them out but he insisted on keeping them, finally he gave in and on the very next cast his son was hooked up and then again and again. This is my only superstition and it always seems to hold true don’t take BANANA’S ON THE BOAT! The rest of the day went as planned catching fish with Alexis catching his first big Snook.

This afternoon’s trip with Vito, Dan and Rob is a tough one starting at 1 pm on the full moon but we went out and gave it a go. I attempted to get out to the beaches for tarpon but the wind was blowing pretty hard because of a rainstorm off shore. We stayed inshore and caught plenty of Trout, Jacks and Cuda’s.

I dropped off the guys and met up with my buddy Raul and went back out for Tarpon. We gave it about an hour and a half and never got a bite while fishing the beach. I told him let’s go inside Government Cut and try a jig and a Gulp Shrimp. This usually will produce a couple different species. I had a big fish ripping off line, it was fighting like a big Jack or Permit, while I was fighting the fish Raul was booking a trip and didn’t here me tell him which was to drive the boat. The fish got up over the ledge and cut me off while Raul managed a couple Jacks up to 8 lbs. The other guys that were fishing for Tarpon only managed 1 fish.

I am at Flamingo today with Jose and his sons Eric and Leo. Jose Started out quickly by catching a nice 29”Snook a Red and a Trout. There was a lot of action in the area and we managed a few more Trout. I ran to the Gulf where there has been some big Tarpon the only problem west wind at 15 mph had it stirred up. I had netted some Mullet and put 2 out behind the boat. The Shark showed up and destroyed our baits we had 20 or so incredible bites landing 1. I looked up and saw a big dorsal and it was a 10 foot Hammerhead I tried to get the baits in front of him but he had something else on his mind. As the day went on we did hook 1 big Tarpon which thru the bait. I went to a spot I haven’t been to in a while and it was red hot for 3 hours! I ran out of mullet but had a bunch of baits in my chum line so I threw the net again. We must of had 3 baits and caught fish on every one, not all the fish were great but they did catch Jacks, Snook, Trout, Catfish, and the Sharks were out of control. Jose had back-to-back Lemon Sharks over 150lbs., which spooled him. He did manage to land both of them. Leo had a Snook and then a 60 lb Lemon While Eric consistently hooked up and had the bad luck on the boat. Eric had back-to-back Snook come off but the bite was incredible. The guys were beat Jose finally threw in the towel. These guys can’t wait to do it again they booked next Saturday.
