Merry Christmas

I am with Mitch from Biscayne Rods today, the finest rods on the market! I promised him a bunch of fish, I also told him we would fish an area that I fish all to myself. It didn't take long when we saw a couple Snook busting up baits, but we got no bites. We moved around a little and finally got into the Redfish, we ended up with about 10 or so. The Snook weren't far behind, even though this wasn't the bite I expected. We ended up with 6 Snook but the tides were not in our favor, that's why the bite was slow. We hit a few more spot and called it a day.

I am fishing with Mitch again today but with a spin; he is taking me out on his boat. He says I need a break from work and he would like to pole me around! The morning started out watching a monster Snook racing across the flat busting a mullet school. As we were watching that a big Tarpon rolled in front of me. I placed my Twitch n Rap in front of his path, twitched it and let it sit right in front of the 80 pound fish. The next thing Mitch hear's is my drag screaming and 80 lbs of jumping Tarpon. The Tarpon jumped twice and then threw the lure. We watched the Snook go back to work but they turned off after a while, we did manage to put a Jack and a Trout in the boat while casting at rolling Tarpon.

Today's tides were really low, maybe lowest of the year so we really had to be careful not to get stuck. Once the tide fell out we started hitting potholes and channels edges where we found Snook ,Mitch continued to pole and I caught Snook after Snook. I took him to one spot and told him there will be a Redfish right there and there was, he was impressed! The wind was gusting between 20 and 30 making it tough we called it a day at PM.

Today I'm fishing with Mike and Barto in Whitewater Bay which is located in the back country of Everglades National park. The first stop was for Tarpon; as we got close enough to cast we had some Porpoise move in. It appeared they were feeding on some Snook that we just off the shoreline. It was impressive but it didn't help our chances of getting hooked up in the area. We moved on an looked for the strongest current we could find, but the fish did not co-operate. Barto and Mike finally had a couple strikes and Barto was hooked up to his first Redfish. Mike caught a couple ladyfish and we moved on but he bite continued to be slow. I told them I have a spot but its 20 miles away but the conditions are right, the said let's do it! I ran the Maverick HPX as fast as I could and got there in about 35 minutes, Barto enjoyed the ride since he had never been here before. I got us in the area, the tides were extremely low which brings the Snook out of the mangroves and onto the banks. The second thing I need here is wind and luckily it is blowing 25 mph today. It didn't take long and the Snook were coming in on every cast, no real giants but a couple which made 26- 28". I told them this would be more of a numbers game and they had no problem with it. I changed up baits from a "Twitch n Rap" to a Gulp Pogy and the Redfish responded without hesitation. They caught 6 Redfish or so and then Barto's rod doubled over, his fish is pulling drag and at first I though maybe Goliath Grouper but it ended up being a 29" Redfish. They caught a few more Snook and Reds and we moved on, the tide switched and the bite was over that fast.
Barto gave me the best compliment I have ever had, he said "I was the hardest working guide" he had ever hired! At the end of the day that's makes it all worth while.

The fishing is good and the temeratures are comfortable making for a great day on the water.
Let me be Santa for your or a family member.

The big Tarpon will be showing up soon off the coast of Miami Beach and the backcountry of Whitewater Bay. This is the time of year where catching a big fish is a possibility for the even the most novice angler. The Redfish, Snook adn other back country fish will eat on the coldest days all you have to do is find the holes.

This morning I am fishing with Sam Rose, I picked him up on Fisher Island and we headed to Stiltsville for Bonefish. There was a large area of bad weather hanging of the coast but by 9 am it cleared and beautiful conditions for about an hour and a half. Luckily we found some Bonefish but with the 68 degree cold water flowing out of the bay they were not really active although we did have one follow the shrimp until he saw the boat. The conditions deteriorated, I told Sam I have a deep water spot where we could catch some fish including Bones. I rigged a jig with jumbo Shrimp and Sam caught fish after fish; Grouper, Snapper, Jacks, Blue runners and then he had the big bite. The battle up and down in 16 feet of water continued for about five minutes with the fish coming off just below the boat. Sam asked what do you think it was. I told him I though it was a nice size Mutton Snapper because the live in the big fans on the bottom and that's they way they fight. After a couple more fish and waiting for another big bite we called it a day.

This is it the end of another year I know we here it a lot but it went by fast and I really had some fun in the process. This past week is the perfect example I fished with great people and although the conditions were very tough we persevered thru it. The full moon and strong winds at the end of the week made for some tough fishing but every one left feeling satisfied.

Gabe and Reno were part of a 3 boat trip that was all part of high school friend getting together for there buddy Vinny's wedding on Saturday. We started out with a couple small Snook and a Goliath Grouper 20 minutes into the trip. We motored out looking for Tarpon and I told them to work the point while I kept an eye open for Tarpon. Reno cast in to a fallen tree and his drag is started screaming off his reel, he had a monster 38" Snook eat his Gulp Pogy. The Snook was 38' and 13 lbs very light for the size. Reno landed the fish and we got a couple great pic's of the Snook. we covered a lot of water that day catching plenty of fish. Jacks, Snappers Ladyfish were the by catch but we stumbled into a school of Redfish on a bar where Gabe caught one and had another hook up which manage to come loose. I told them I have a big Snook spot where we have to make really long cast and can't make any disturbance while we are there; the fish are really spooky there. On the approach Reno caught a nice Redfish on the point , while Gabe was making a long cast to the area i pointed out. On his first cast he hooked up to a snook that was obviously upset, she ran 20 yards right then 20 left and in and out. I told him there's your monster Snook take it easy, just keep the line tight . Gabe brought the Snook boat side and there was a lot of screaming, the Snook was a monster. This snook was shorter but much thicker around the head and shoulders
measuring 35 inches and 16 lbs. I took some pic's of of proud and smiling Gabe with his big Snook.
we made a 30 minute stop on the way back and cast at some Tarpon, this was an awsone setting! The water was slick calm and the Tarpon were laid up all we could see was the tip's of their dorsal's on the surface. We had about 10 shots and Reno had a 100 pound Tarpon eat his lure and take off to the races. It didn't last long but he will always remember it.

Today I am with Wally and his wife Lizzy, I fished with Wally last year on a day the weather deteriorated and it happed again this year the wind made it tough, but again we persevered.
It took along time and and we coverd 90 miles round trip but we ended up with a couple small Snook, with Jacks, Ladyfish Trout mixed in. Lizzy learned to cast quickly and caught plenty of fish all by herself. The unfortunate part was the fishing was incredible tough this day. Wally said he appreciated how hard I worked and he been fishing long enough to know the conditions were tough, that is the best thing a customer can say to me on a day i am feeling likeI didn't get it done!

Derek his small daughters Jade and Andrea were fishing along with his friend Dave and again today I have my work cut out it is really breezy. I netted some bait and went to work it didn't take long, Jade caught a 3 lb. Jack and Andrea had a nice Snook eat her bait and start peeling off line. She battled the Snook for 5 munutes finaly getting it to the boat where her proud father took some photo's. The rest of the day was difficult the wind was 25 mph and the floating grass was just everywhere making it hard for the bait to get to the bottom. The end result was a bunch of Trout Jack, ladyfish and a few Catfish.

I am fishing with Zack and his son Clay today in Whitewater Bay for Tarpon. The conditions were not to bad early but by 9 am the wind picked up to over 20 mph. That didn't discourage us we cast and cast at the Tarpon but they were not eating. We changed our strategy and started fishing the shorelines, catching Snook, Trout, Redfish, Snappers Ladyfish, Jacks and Goliath Groupers. We went back and tried the Tarpon again but they still weren't interested. Clay who is 14 years old and a dynamite caster hooked a big Snook and was really excited, unfortunately it came unglued. The kid was a little upset, but kept his composer and kept casting! Clay made a good cast under a over hanging tree, his Gulp Shrimp got hit hard and he was attached to a big Snook; again! I don't understand it, I watched him set the hook and I thought he did set it right but the fish came off . Its possible the hook had a flat spot from hitting a mangrove branch. I know he will catch a Snook someday but I really wanted it to be this day. Zack had landed a couple Snook and Clay wanted one too! He did get the thrill of having the big one that got away story.

The Tarpon will be arriving off of Miami Beach soon hopefully with this full moon and a nice shrimp run. stayed tuned and I will keep you informed.

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hopefully you get your Christmas wish of more time on the water.

There are a lot of options this month so I'm sure I can find a fish or 2 for your needs, if you would like to give it a try give me a call at 305 333 8149
