Tarpon Fishing Florida - Biscayne Bay - Miami

Tarpon Fish Record: 243 lbs.
Tarpon
fishing information: slow grower; matures at 7 to 13 years
of age; spawning occurs between May and September; can tolerate
wide range of salinity; juveniles commonly found in fresh water;
can breathe air at surface; feeds mainly on fish and large crustaceans.
The
fish anglers target are females, who exceed 200 or even 250 pounds.
Males seldom get bigger than 140 pounds. Tarpon spawn on a new or
full moon, way offshore. A female may spawn 4- to 20-million eggs
a year for 25 or 30 years.
Seasons-
different Tarpon fishing areas of South Florida; Miami, Biscayne
Bay, Flamingo, Keys and Everglades
December
thru June- This season starts at Haulover Inlet in December,
the Tarpon will gradually move south during the following 6 weeks
to Government Cut. These Tarpon school up waiting for the
Shrimp runs usually on or around the full moon; when it occurs hold
on! These Tarpon will run from 30lbs to 150 lbs. In April the Tarpon
change feeding habits to Blue Crabs, this is a very active time
for Tarpon to feed.
March
thru July - Tarpon migrate south along the edge of the
Biscayne Bay flats towards the Fl. Keys, fly fishing is the
game here but they will eat lures and bait. Small Tarpon gather
in the motes around Islands in Florida Bay, great fly fishing opportunity.
February
thru April- Backcountry at Flamingo for Giant Tarpon. These
fish eat artificial lures and flies without hesitation. These are
big Tarpon the small ones are usually over 60lbs.The peak of this
bite is usually around the full moon in March, the water temperature
needs to rise to above 70 degrees for several days.
April
Thru October- The Tarpon school up on the outside
of Flamingo, from Florida Bay to the Shark River area. These Tarpon
are in open water, on the flats and in the channels that border
the flats. These Tarpon range from 5lbs. into the 150 pound class
and better.
